Sports > Agassi survives Berdych scare to reach last 16

Seventh seed Andre Agassi survived a huge test of his U.S. Open credentials on Saturday as he beat Czech teenager Tomas Berdych 3-6 6-1 6-4 7-6 to reach the fourth round.

The 19-year-old Berdych stunned Agassi in the first set with some massive hitting but the 35-year-old American dug deep to clinch victory in exactly 2 1/2 hours.

Berdych beat world number one Roger Federer at the Olympic Games last year and another upset looked on the cards when he stormed through the opening set.

Agassi showed all his experience to take the second and third sets, but Berdych served for the fourth set at 5-3 only for Agassi to break back and win the tiebreak 7-2.

He will play 24th seed Mikhail Youzhny or Belgian Xavier Malisse for a place in the quarter-finals.
