Sports > A's romp over Yankees, stay tied for AL West lead

Scott Hatteberg had three hits and drove in four runs and Dan Haren pitched six shutout innings as the Oakland Athletics mauled the New York Yankees 12-0 in American League play Friday night in Oakland.

The A's scored six runs in the first inning off New York starter Al Leiter and added another four runs in the second to keep the Athletics tied for first place in the AL West with the Los Angeles Angels, who won at home against Seattle.

The lopsided loss knocked the Yankees out of the AL wild card lead, as New York fell one game behind both the A's and the Angels.

Jason Kendall hit a two-run double and Bobby Kielty hit a solo homer to key the big six-run first inning off Leiter, who failed to get out of the inning.

Hatteberg added a three-run homer in the second and Jay Payton produced a solo shot for Oakland, who led 10-0 after two innings.

Haren (12-10) had an easy night but was sharp nonetheless, allowing just four hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Three relievers completed the seven-hitter.

Kielty and Hatteberg both had three hits for the Athletics, who made 13 hits off three Yankee pitchers. Kendall and Payton both wound up with two RBIs for Oakland, who slipped into a tie for the AL West lead the night before by losing to the Angels.

Leiter (7-11) allowed six runs on five hits in just 2/3 inning to take the loss for the Yankees, who had just seven hits.

The Yankees had their chances, getting runners on in just about every inning, but couldn't cash in against any of Oakland's four pitchers.

In Boston, Alejandro Freire homered as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Red Sox 7-3.

John Maine (2-1) pitched five innings, allowing three runs -- two earned -- on two hits, walking five and striking out five for the win.

In Chicago, Juan Uribe and Carl Everett both hit three-run homers as the White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 9-1.

Freddy Garcia (12-7) pitched seven innings, allowing one run on two hits, walking one and striking out seven for the win. Willie Harris also homered for the White Sox.

Sean Douglass (5-3) pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out four to take the loss.

In Minneapolis, Ben Broussard hit a two-run homer as the Cleveland Indians beat the Minnesota Twins 6-1.

C.C. Sabathia (12-9) pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing three hits, walking one and striking out seven for the win. Grady Sizemore homered for the Indians.

Brad Radke (8-11) pitched seven innings, allowing four runs -- three earned -- on nine hits and striking out four to take the loss.

In Toronto, Shea Hillenbrand scored the go-ahead run and Frank Menechino homered as the Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 4-3.

In Kansas City, Rod Barajas homered twice including once in the 10th inning as the Texas Rangers beat the Royals 8-7.

In Anaheim, Paul Byrd scattered five hits over eight innings as the Los Angeles Angels kept pace with the A's by defeating the Seattle Mariners 4-1.
