drove in four runs and Dan Haren pitched six shutout innings as
the Oakland Athletics mauled the New York Yankees 12-0 in
American League play Friday night in Oakland. The A's scored six runs in the first inning off New York
starter Al Leiter and added another four runs in the second to
keep the Athletics tied for first place in the AL West with the
Los Angeles Angels, who won at home against Seattle.
The lopsided loss knocked the Yankees out of the AL wild
card lead, as New York fell one game behind both the A's and
the Angels.
Jason Kendall hit a two-run double and Bobby Kielty hit a
solo homer to key the big six-run first inning off Leiter, who
failed to get out of the inning.
Hatteberg added a three-run homer in the second and Jay
Payton produced a solo shot for Oakland, who led 10-0 after two
innings.
Haren (12-10) had an easy night but was sharp nonetheless,
allowing just four hits with six strikeouts and four walks.
Three relievers completed the seven-hitter.
Kielty and Hatteberg both had three hits for the Athletics,
who made 13 hits off three Yankee pitchers. Kendall and Payton
both wound up with two RBIs for Oakland, who slipped into a tie
for the AL West lead the night before by losing to the Angels.
Leiter (7-11) allowed six runs on five hits in just 2/3
inning to take the loss for the Yankees, who had just seven
hits.
The Yankees had their chances, getting runners on in just
about every inning, but couldn't cash in against any of
Oakland's four pitchers.
In Boston, Alejandro Freire homered as the Baltimore
Orioles beat the Red Sox 7-3.
John Maine (2-1) pitched five innings, allowing three runs
-- two earned -- on two hits, walking five and striking out
five for the win.
Lenny DiNardo (0-1) pitched six innings, allowing four runs
-- one earned -- on seven hits, walking one and striking out
six to take the loss. Jason Varitek drove in two runs for the
Red Sox.
In Chicago, Juan Uribe and Carl Everett both hit three-run
homers as the White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 9-1.
Freddy Garcia (12-7) pitched seven innings, allowing one
run on two hits, walking one and striking out seven for the
win. Willie Harris also homered for the White Sox.
Sean Douglass (5-3) pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing eight
runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out four to take
the loss.
In Minneapolis, Ben Broussard hit a two-run homer as the
Cleveland Indians beat the Minnesota Twins 6-1.
C.C. Sabathia (12-9) pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing three
hits, walking one and striking out seven for the win. Grady
Sizemore homered for the Indians.
Brad Radke (8-11) pitched seven innings, allowing four runs
-- three earned -- on nine hits and striking out four to take
the loss.
In Toronto, Shea Hillenbrand scored the go-ahead run and
Frank Menechino homered as the Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay
Devil Rays 4-3.
In Kansas City, Rod Barajas homered twice including once in
the 10th inning as the Texas Rangers beat the Royals 8-7.
In Anaheim, Paul Byrd scattered five hits over eight
innings as the Los Angeles Angels kept pace with the A's by
defeating the Seattle Mariners 4-1.
